This project is comprised of a complete gut renovation and front and rear addition to an existing ranch home. The goal was to reimagine the residence with an emphasis on light, flow, and connection to the landscape. The design reorganizes the interior to maximize on daylight and spatial clarity, responding to the client’s life as a steel erector and musician by creating an environment that balances precision, creativity, and calm. A new rear addition is defined by a broad, clipped gable roof, that extends from the main house and reorients the focus toward the garden beyond.
The sunken living room is connected to the screened porch with large pocketing sliding doors, completely blurring the spaces together on nicer days. Interior finishes include smoke-stained ash, walnut, and slate tile to establish a retrained yet expressive material palette.
Structural steel was integrated throughout, including the front entry canopy, rear screened porch and rear entry. The steel was custom detailed to include a recessed wood insert to soften and connect to the surrounding wood soffits. The home’s backdrop is a lush, public garden which provides a soft contrast to the dark façade. This project reinterprets the ranch typology without erasing it, staying true to the grounded, intentional, and quietly expressive nature.
