This 3,000 SF single family residence was designed on a wooded, sloped site adjacent to a natural creek. The design drew from Scandinavian Modern precedents, with an emphasis on clarity of plan, material restraint, and integration with the landscape. The building was stepped into the terrain, elevating the primary living spaces to improve daylight, natural ventilation, and views to the surrounding forest. The overall organization separated private and public functions while maintaining a straightforward and efficient circulation pattern appropriate for the family.
The home was constructed using conventional methods (pre-engineered wood trusses, wood stud framing, and poured in place foundation walls) to support efficient construction that started during Covid. The dark exterior reduced visual impact within the wooded setting, while interior materials were selected for durability, warmth, and minimal maintenance. Integrated built-ins were used to increase storage and reduce visual clutter. Energy performance was a key design consideration, resulting in the use of high insulation values and an ERV system to support indoor air quality and overall efficiency.
