This 850 SF addition to a mid-century modern residence extended the original 1950’s home while accommodating the evolving needs of a growing family. A new shed form connects to the existing structure with a flat roof transition allowing the addition to complement the home’s existing proportions and material language without direct imitation. The project includes two bedrooms, a full bathroom, and a flexible secondary living space used for hosting get-togethers, yoga, and daily family life.
The L-shaped plan defines a private courtyard that strengthens the relationship between interior and exterior spaces. Materials were selected in close dialogue with the existing house, including carefully sourced brick that aligned with the original masonry in scale and texture. Natural lights shapes the interior through clerestory glazing and generous windows as well as a large glass accordion door that opens directly to the courtyard. Mechanical systems were routed through the floor to maintain slender roof profiles, reinforcing a disciplined architectural expression that reads as a natural continuation of the original home.
